Since 2011, The Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation of Philadelphia has been recognizing and rewarding school principals who have made significant leadership and humanitarian contributions to his/her school community.
Please help us to congratulate Mr. Steven Gilligan, Masterman’s 2020 Lindback Award Winner!
Steven Gilligan has taught American history and government at Masterman for the past 22 years. A National Board certified teacher, Gilligan enjoys leading his 8th graders on a rollicking journey through the nation’s past and examining current political issues with his 12th grade A.P. U.S. Government & Politics students. He brings tireless enthusiasm, creativity, and humor into his classroom. Masterman alumni frequently remember Gilligan’s mock election project in which 12th graders work together to run school-wide campaigns for candidates in prominent local, state, or national elections. Outside of the classroom, Gilligan devotes time to meeting with students to review material, coaches the high school debate team, and co-leads Masterman’s chapter of Students Run Philly Style, a middle and high school club that fosters confidence and well-being through running. Last summer, he joined several Masterman colleagues in traveling to Tanzania to help train local secondary teachers in American teaching methods through the Friends of Mwangaza program.
